For International Women’s Day 2024, Lerch Bates hosted a webinar featuring Lindsey Blyghton – Portfolio Development Consultant, Sherri Cardilla – Director of Inspections & Testing, Tamara Higgins – Regional Managing Director, Cecilia Hualpa – Project Analyst and Sophia Poulos – Senior Specialist who not only represent different job roles within the company but diverse locations across the world. The event was an insightful opportunity to hear unique perspectives and learn more about women in our industry.
When asked about strategies for women to advocate for themselves, Cardilla shared the importance of networking by saying, “I’ve had to lean on my network to learn new things, obtain new clients and answer some questions that I don’t have the answers to.” Alongside the topic of having a support network to gain guidance from is mentorship. Blyghton gained confidence from strong male mentors in her career sharing, “They pushed me to take that next step within my career when I may not have had the confidence to tell someone that I am the right person for the job.” Mentorships of all types, “… provide support and guidance when times are really challenging and when times are great,” as Poulos frames it.
As the webinar wrapped up, our panelists shared some final thoughts on the future and celebrating the achievements of women thus far. Speaking about advice for younger women starting their careers, Hualpa said, “Don’t be shy. Speak up. Be confident.” Everyone has a unique perspective they bring to the table, and by communicating and advocating for ourselves, alongside our community, we can reach new heights.
