Building Enclosure Risks

On March 28, स्टेफनी शॉबर, पीई तथा जेफ क्रो, पीई were guests on the All Things Facades podcast, hosted by Adrian Lowenstein, P.E. from Skyline Windows + Schüco, where they discussed Building Enclosure Risks from failures to best practices and the differences in projects around the country.

स्टेफनी शॉबर, पीई is the Director of Operations for the Enclosures team in Texas, and she is an invaluable member of Team LB with more than 15 years of experience in world-class new construction and building repositioning projects. She is also a huge proponent of bird safe glass and has helped Lerch Bates launch consulting services for bird friendly buildings as a भवन विज्ञान service for our clients. Stefanie worked in New York City for several years before making the move to Austin, and she talks about the many differences in the built environment between those two locations with Adrian.

A recurring topic throughout the podcast is climate and how it differs by location and what that means for the future of our built environment. Stefanie concluded the podcast by emphasizing the importance of resilience for our enclosures and facades as code compliance alone won’t create a lasting structure, citing a recent windstorm in Dallas that ripped the TPO off roofs across the city. Stefanie poses this question at the end of the episode: “We know that the climate is probably not going to get milder, so what are we doing to make sure that what we invest in our buildings is more resilient?”

जेफ क्रो, पीई, Technical Director of Enclosure Design for Lerch Bates, is an expert in complex and innovative building enclosure systems and has been with Lerch Bates since 2010. He provided a deep dive into building air tightness during the podcast and highlighted the importance of ventilation by saying, “We are never trying to get zero air leakage to address things like sick building syndrome (a condition where carbon-based toxins seep into household products and furniture causing negative effects on health). You want to make your envelope as tight as possible and get natural ventilation through the mechanical system.” Enclosure systems are more than just following code, they make sure your building is at peak performance and healthy for years to come.

Our भवन विज्ञान team is equipped for all your Building Enclosure needs from new design to repair and modernization. Learn more from Stefanie and Jeff by watching the full podcast below, and reach out to Lerch Bates today with any questions or to start a new project.
